Measurement of the PPN Parameter γ with Radio Signals from the Cassini Spacecraft at X- and Ka-Bands

چکیده
Radio Doppler data from the Cassini spacecraft during its solar conjunction in June 2002 can be used to measure the bending of light by solar gravitation. In terms of the standard post-Newtonian parameter γ, we find that γ − 1 = (−1.3 ± 5.2) × 10, in agreement with the theory of General Relativity. This result implies that the parameter ω in the Brans-Dicke theory is greater than 9000 at a 95% confidence level.

Doppler measurement of the solar gravitational deflection
Testing alternative metric theories of gravity with an accuracy much better than the present level has recently drawn great attention, in particular in relation to the search for a very weak scalar field, a possible remnant of an early inflationary cosmology. The gravitational deflection of electromagnetic waves is controlled by the dimensionless post-Newtonian parameter γ , which takes a value...

of this satellite (Lorenz 1993). Titan’s interior is equally mysterious. The clues yielded by the basic data—mass, Measurements of the Doppler frequency change in a microwave beam sent to and transponded back from an interplanesize, and density—and by our knowledge of Titan atmotary spacecraft are very sensitive to the quadrupole gravitaspheric composition—largely due to Voyager 1 radio octiona...

Radio Doppler data from the Cassini spacecraft during its solar conjunction in June 2002 can be used to test General Relativity. In terms of the standard post-Newtonian parameter 7 , the result is y 1 = (-4.8 f 5.7) x including both random and systematic error. Einstein’s theory has survived yet another test.
متن کاملRadiowave Phase Scintillation and Precision Doppler Tracking of Spacecraft
Phase scintillation caused by propagation through irregularities in the solar wind, ionosphere, and troposphere, introduces noise in spacecraft radio science experiments. In precision Doppler tracking observations, scintillation can be the dominant noise source; statistics of this propagation noise are necessary for experiment planning and in design of optimum signal processing procedures. Here...
متن کاملGravity field and interior structure of Rhea
Doppler data generated with the Cassini spacecraft’s radio carrier waves at Xand Ka-bands can be used to determine the quadrupole moments of Rhea’s gravitational field. The resulting tri-axial field should be consistent with the assumption that Rhea is in tidal and rotational equilibrium. If so, we can construct interior models that are consistent with Rhea’s mean density of 1236 kg/m3, determi...
